| Bird Identification This sure is a long hard trip, this bird identification I just cannot get it right No matter how hard I try I thought it was a robin; I kept it in my sight It sure did have a big old beak I tried to identify it with all my might The spots were big and round I found it in our back yard Making a honking sound I tried to identify it before it nested for the night I had to get this little dandy right All those spots on its chest I thought a robin had a red breast But then I saw a young one And I thought about all those spots I’m just so confused While on this birding path I trod I hope everyone understands that when it comes to birds, I love em But trying to figure out what they are is such a pain All the flycatchers turn to one And all the warblers look the same “oh me, oh my”, This is definitely not a game These birds are so much fun It’s the identification I dread Searching and looking for hours It’s times like this I wish I had special powers Maybe, just maybe if I get the name right I can put that little darling on my own web site Then maybe, just maybe that image will show up in lights Maybe it will end up on “Indiana birding on line”! Stan Tekielo and Kenn Kaufman are so much help My copy of Kens “Birds of North America” and my copy of Stans “Birds of Indiana are beginning to look all worn out Maybe someday I’ll be as good as they are That’s a big old laugh All those birds are beginning to look alike So that statement I sure do doubt I now have a new collection of “birds of Indiana” It’s called, “What is it”? We need a new bird called, “what is it’? Tell me what you think. It would make me feel like a million dollar gal If I could come up with a birding Id pal My collection got so big My gigabytes went though the roof What in the world to do? I guess I’ll have to get smart or quit going to the woods Now little girl, don’t even think it To quit would really be absurd! My “picture it” program was in a dilemma Full and running over with feathers and wings And a lot of extra things Like squirrels, otters, beavers and possums, Even beautiful scenes from autumn Any living creature that moved found my view finder Like snakes, turtles, and old toad frogs When wings wasn’t moving, I found myself roaming around Watching for things down on the ground. I guess nature found me and we fell in love And now I’m hooked Forever looking up and around My name is Mary Alice Bowles Nature keeps me on my toes. ©Mary Alice Bowles 10/3/05 |
