| HUMMER Archilochus colubris Ruby-throated Hummingbird Size : 3-to3 and one-half inches (7.5 to 9cm) The male is a tiny indescent green bird with black throat patch that reflect bright ruby red in sunlight. Female builds a cup nest. She has one to two broods per year. The eggs are white unmarked. Incubation period is 12 to 14 days Fledgings are 14 to 18 days. They migrate to southern staes, Mexico and Central America. For food they drink nectar and eat insects. No other bird is this small. The female is the same as male but without the red throat. The only thing that is as small as the humming bird is the Humming bird moth sometimes mistaken for humming birds. |
