| SCARLET TANAGER |
Scarlet Tanager His presence I felt for miles away I felt his eyes piercing from the skys My heart stood still Is this really him? I’ve searched for years Oh camera, don’t fail me now There he is in the view finder Click, click, click, , “Wow”! That red, that shade of red Those black wings galore Beauty I had never seen before Bird heaven has opened her door. He’s like a ghost, quite and shy But owning that forest with his tender touch Eating his way from tree-top to tree Finding just the right caterpillars in the tree ca-no-py A visitor from South Americas tropical forest Winging his way through our trees my spirit sings with joy Indiana welcomes you My pretty little boy All dressed in red and black Searching for beetles for a very tasty snack Now here I am again the very next day Please beautiful Scarlet, come out and play I’ve waited for hours, the sun is really hot 90 degrees in the shade, another July day Now Mr. Scarlet, let me see those shades of red Give these eyes a happy sight Please come out and sing with all your might. The trees are alive with every other bird But nothing, not any other bird Can meet my expectations of a birders love But you, “Mr. Scarlet” have spoiled my eyes and I will cherish this blessing till the day I die! ©Mary Alice Bowles 7/7/05 |
