| A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER |
| Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) Status: Regular migrant. Plovers have short straight bills, short necks, and a rather round-headed look. They often run a few paces and then stop. The most common of the small plovers is the semipalmated plover. Nesting in the far north and wintering on southern beaches. It is found everywhere during spring and fall migration, on mudflats of coast, lakes, and rivers. We found this one out on the beach at Lake Hardy in Southern Indiana. Habitat: Most common on seasonally flooded wetlands. Uncommon on lakeshores and in short vegetation associated with semipermanently flooded wetlands. |
