| Ruby-crowned Kinglet This is a very true story |
In every woods I walked in, my eyes never stopped searching for her. Sometimes I could see her in my minds eye just flitting from every tree in the woods. I first saw her in the year of 2001 out at Lake Hardy. She was all green and just swinging from leaf to leaf and I can honestly say I had never seen anything as pretty as this little bird. I got some shots of her, at least I thought I did, but when I got home the pictures were not so good. For the last three years I have been searching, searching, searching for a little tiny green bird On October 18, 2005 we went to the Lake, it was a beautiful Autumn day, I left George on top the hill looking at all kinds of warblers playing around in the trees. None of those birds matched the look of my little green bird. So sadly I told George, my husband, "Honey I am going to go down over the hill and search for you know who". I threw my camera over my shoulder and walked the pathway looking for a patch of green in every tree. Sadly there was no patch of green. I walked on down the hill, enjoying the sun and the leaves: Sometimes a leaf would fall right on top of my head and then float on over my shoulder. The lake was gleaming with the red of Autumn as the shadows of the trees were boucing in the bottom of the water. What a sight to behold. I walked on over the hill thinking about how God created Indiana so beautiful. She has just the right amount of hills and just the right amount of flat-lands and she is so pleasing to the eyes of this great-grandmother. At that point, I just started singing a little song almost at the top of my lungs, not one human being was in sight, not one person could hear but me and God and I am so sure he did not mind listening, since my song was all about him. My song was cut short by a group of birds playing and flitting at the bottom of some pine trees down over the hill. Oh no, it couldn't be! "Run Mary run quietly, see if that’s her". The closer I got, the more my heart leaped and danced with joy. There she was not only her but a group of her brothers and sisters. I just could not get enough of her. I was the happiest birder in the world. I snapped pictures for awhile, but I knew the sun was not right, and basically I knew the pictures would not be any good, but at least I found her. Suddenly they flew on over the hill and I did not follow, I just knew that God had answered my prayer. I thanked him so much for putting her in my path-way. About that time something flew directly over my head, I could have reached out and touched her, she flew from one pine tree to another pine tree while keeping her eye glued on me. She flew inside the tree and hid, I walked softly toward the tree, just needing to be with her and all of a sudden she just bounces right out and perches on a limb right in front of my face, and then runs right back in the middle. It looked like she's playing hide-n-seek. She was just in the right spot, just in the right sun-light. Everything was perfect! A photographers dream shot! We played hide-n-seek for about half an hour. She acted just like she knew what she was doing and I just stood there and laughed. I snapped images of her until my battery went ka-put and the sun started going down. I told her good-by and let her migrate on south and in my mind I thanked her for one of the most enjoyable moments in my life. I truly thank you sweet Ruby -Crowned Kinglet. May God bless you and keep you from all harm and I hope to meet you again next year. YOUR FRIEND MARY ALICE BOWLES 12/1/05 |
